Bedbugs are a common pest in some households, and a real nuisance if they get into your house. Their body structure looks flat and a bit wide, appearing to have lines across their body. They hide under rugs, in furniture, crevices, and their favorite place—on beds and beddings. Besides these areas, bedbugs can easily be found on garments and they can be transferred from place to place with clothes. Sometime back in history, bedbugs had arisen as pests of public health significance since they had spread wide and far. Bedbugs bite on the skin to suck blood from the host leaving an irritating, itchy welt on the spot. Presently, the population of bedbugs is relatively less compared to the population in the 20th Century. However, current trends indicate that bedbugs could be on the rise. Apart from the trends, bedbugs reproduce fast and you just want to get rid of them at all costs. Having known that any population of bedbugs is troublesome, you now need to know various ways of managing and controlling the pest. Once you have noted the presence of bedbugs in any part of the house, you can easily get rid of bedbug using insecticides. Insecticides are applied on walls and crevices where the bedbugs are likely to be. However, some aerosol sprays cause the bugs to disperse, thus making it difficult to eliminate them and having the house clean. Another way of eliminating bedbug is by using rubbing alcohol. This chemical exterminates bedbugs on the spot and also destroys the eggs. Another method of destroying bedbugs is using temperature. Placing the infested garments in a bag and laundering at a substantially high temperature e.g. at least 120°F will kill the bedbugs. This approach will only deal with those items that can be laundered. Steam can be used suitably to kill bedbugs by spraying it on crevices, corners and seams. The use of silica gel is also applicable in controlling bedbugs. In this case, one needs to spread silica gel in the house around areas infested with bedbugs, where it will dehydrate the bugs to death. Diatomaceous earth can be used instead of silica gel to serve the same purpose. In a bid to eliminate bedbugs, people have used various other methods including vacuuming the house, or discarding the infested items away from the house. The latter option is taken as the last resort due to the economic implication involved. However, the house can be vacuumed and the bag discarded to avoid re-infesting the house with another batch of bugs. All these control measures considered, they together work well to eliminate visible bedbugs but more will be required to keep the home free from bedbugs. Proper housekeeping and sanitation is vital in the maintenance of a pest free home. Having a specialist firm do routine inspection and pest control activities will also go a long way in helping you get rid of bedbug. If such experts note bedbug infestation, they can conduct a spot treatment on the affected area followed by an ultra low volume misting with insecticide. It is recommended that one procures the services of a professional pest management firm.
