In Division 1AA football, the FCS schools continue to hold their own against the big boys, posting repeated stunning upsets of Division 1A teams. After only 2 week of the new season, seven Division 1AA teams have gone on the road as double-digit underdogs and come away with victories against Division 1A opponents. The party started on the first day of the college season, when Division 1AA Towson rolled into Connecticut August 29th and beat the Huskies convincingly 33-18 as a 17-point underdog. Last season’s Div 1AA champion North Dakota State continued party on August 30th, traveling to Manhattan, Kansas to face the Kansas State Wildcats. The line for this game opened at 28 points, but moved all the way to Kansas State minus 14 points at kickoff. ND State trailed by 4 heading into the final quarter, but held the Wildcats to zero points the rest of the way, and scored the game’s final touchdown for a 24-21 upset. These two upsets seemed to set the tone for the opening week of the college football season, showing the bigger Division 1A schools that the FCS also has plenty of talent. Thesurprises continued the following day on August 31st, as four more Division 1AA schools pulled off upsets on the road over Division 1A opponents. Eastern Washington traveled to Eugene, Oregon to do battle with Oregon State, and what a battle it was! Despite being a 4-touchdown underdog, Eastern Washington took a 29-17 lead into the locker room at halftime, and held on for a 49-46 win over its Pac-10 opponent. McNeese State was a 3-touchdown underdog at South Florida, but took a 33-7 halftime lead, and finished off the Bulls 53-21. Northern Iowa went to Aimes, Iowa and came out with a 28-20 victory over Iowa State, even though they were a 10-point underdog to start the game. Eastern Illinois traveled across the country to San Diego State as a 2-touchdown underdog, and handed the Aztecs a 40-19 defeat. Finally, Nicholls State beat Eastern Michigan 27-23 despite being at 28.5 point underdog on the road. Not surprisingly, 3 of the 4 teams who pulled off the big upsets have found their way into this week’s top 4 rankings. North Dakota State remains ranked number one, followed by Easter Washington, and Towson State is in fourth, behind Montana State. All the upsets makes one wonder why more sports books don’t carry Division 1AA College Football odds. This week’s featured game is an inter-state rivalry that pits No. 15 Illinois State against No. 12 Eastern Illinois.
