Businessmen are always looking for new ideas and techniques to promote their business. They use different methods such as giving advertisements in newspapers, paper printed directory, radio or television, roadside hoardings etc. These modes are not much efficient as compared to internet. Nowadays people generally prefer to use internet for various purposes such as finding any information of any category. So, businessmen make their websites to promote their business. In earlier modes such as in newspapers information was very confined. Moreover if some error such as misprinting occurs it cannot be rectified unless advertisement is given again. In internet errors can be edited very easily. Similar is with paper printed directory. Advertisement in radio is for short period of time and listener may not be available at that particular time. So in radio advertisement not only information is less but also occurs for a particular time. Advertisement in television also occurs at a particular time and information is less. Users generally skip the advertisements as they are interested in other programs of their choice. You also have to pay for these advertisements. Hence these modes are unsuccessful as compared to internet. There is tough competition in internet world also. Every businessman wants his site to be visited by more number of users. To do this web directory is used. A web directory is a website which consists of other websites in it. These websites are categorized in proper manner. So, it becomes easier for user to find any information .User just have to click on the heading which takes them to website about which information they need. Many users generally make searches in search engines in which searches are made through keyword .But web directories are preferred over search engines as the user do not have to type keyword .Difference between web directory and search engine is use of categories and sub categories as opposed to keyword based searches. Web directories are of three kinds:- free web directory, paid web directory and niche web directory. Free web directories are those in which you can put a link to your website for free. But information is displayed after some time usually it can take six months. These are beneficial to those businessmen who do not want to spend any amount in advertisement of their company. Paid web directories are those in which you need to pay some amount for your website to be displayed. Its advantage is that your information will be displayed within a day or a week. Niche web directories are those which contain information only about one particular category. There is a proper procedure to submit your site in web directories. It needs your name, e mail ,URL ,description and title of your website. You should use capital letters wherever required in description and title of your website. While putting your website in web directory you need to make sure that web directory has high page rank. A web directory which has high page rank is visited by more number of users.
