Appreciation to The Last Supper

Art and Culture,Collecting,Career
During the celebration of the Passover Eve, Jesus and his twelve disciples sat at the table to enjoy the Passover dinner. There were thirteen people at the table and it was their last meal together. In the table, suddenly Jesus felt annoyed, and then he told his disciples that one of them would betray him. But Jesus did not say he was Judah, the disciples did not know who would betray Jesus.

The Last Supper is the most famous work of Italian great artist Leonardo da Vinci. This picture is painted directly on the dining room wall of Milan monastery. Along the table, there are twelve disciples sitting at the table and forming four groups. Jesus sits in the central. He is in a sad way to spread his hands and tells his disciples were betrayed him. Most of his disciples are sprung up in excitement, but Jesus is so calm. We can see his clear outline against the backdrop of the window. Through the window, we see a quiet landscape with blue sky like a halo around the head of Jesus.

On the right of Jesus, we see a dark face which looks leaning as if withdrawing from Jesus's back. His elbow puts on the table and holds a purse. We know he's the traitor, Judah. Judah's purse is his symbol which reminds us that he is the person who takes care of the money for Jesus and the other disciples. The purse contains thirty dollar tips from betraying Jesus. Even if he does not hold the purse, we can reach the painting of da Vinci to identify the evil enemy Judah.

Next to Judah's side shadow is St. Peter. We can also see him with white hair and a pair of white hands. It seems that he tends to lean on the young St. John. The right hands of Peter hold a knife, as if the point of the knife directs at the behind of Judah by accident.St. John's head leans towards Peter. In all the disciples of Jesus, he is a favorite. John is as calm as Jesus, and he has known what his mater thinks about. The left of Jesus is little Jacob who seeks to understand the terrible words that he has heard. And his hands are spread wide. From the shoulder of little Jacob, we see a puzzled Thomas whose doubts are showed through his uplift fingers. The other side of little Jacob, St. Philip leans on Jesus with hands on his chest as if saying, "You know my heart, and you know that I will never betray you. His face shows very worried expression due to love and loyalty.

Around the Jesus, the six disciples are the center of the story. Bartholomew and old Jacob body lean on them and next to them, old Andrew does not stand up, but he wants to hear. Then he raises his hand as though to look for silence. The last three of his disciples, they are having a discussion about the words that Jesus has said with their fingers pointing to the center table.
