SALEM, VA -- A Salem teacher received a national honor Monday. The National Association of Special Education Teachers named CarlieSmith as one of its "Teachers of the Year." Smith is the onlyteacher in Virginia on the group's list. Only 26 total teachersacross the country were honored. Smith teaches kindergarten through 5th grade at G.W. Carver. Full news release from Salem City Schools: The City of Salem School Division is pleased to announce that G.W.Carver Elementary School teacher Carlie Smith has been named aTeacher of the Year by the National Association of SpecialEducation Teachers. She is the only educator from Virginia toreceive this honor and one of just 26 teachers nationwide to earnthis distinction. "I feel very fortunate to work for the Salem City Schools where Itruly believe we focus on every child, every day," says Smith. "Myaward would not have been possible without the tremendous support Ireceive from the administration, as well as the assistants in myclassroom." Winners of this award are nominated by their co-workers and peersand the selection process is based on a variety of factorsincluding curriculum development, innovations in the classroom,relationship building, service to others in the community and theschool division, as well as professional development. Smith workswith kindergarten through fifth grade children at G.W. Carver. "Ms. Smith is a credit to our school division and to ourprofession, and someone who works tirelessly and without complaintfor her children," says Joe Coleman, G.W. Carver principal. "I haveyet to see a more dedicated or compassionate educator. In a fieldknown for its caring and concerned teachers, she stands out as thebest of the best, and I am proud to be her principal." Smith joined the Salem School Division in 2010 after spending threeyears in the Roanoke City School system. She graduated with honorsfrom Bridgewater College in 2007 and at the conclusion of that yearshe was named the college's most outstanding senior. She iscurrently pursuing her Master's degree in Educational Leadershipand Policy Studies from Virginia Tech. "Carlie demonstrates a passion for working with children andfamilies," says Randy Jennings, Salem's Supervisor of SpecialEducation. "She continuously strives to differentiate instructionfor each student and her efforts and love of teaching make Carlie adeserving recipient of this award." Smith is a sports enthusiast who also volunteers her time with theChallenger Baseball League that provides organized play on thediamond for children with disabilities in the greater RoanokeValley. In addition, for the past eight summers, she has beenactively involved with the Roanoke County Parks and Recreationdepartment's Activities Created for Enrichment (ACE) camp which isdesigned for individuals ages 5-21 years-old who have severe orprofound developmental disabilities. "Working with children with special needs is my passion," she says."I am truly humbled by this honor." This is the second significant award that Smith has received thisschool year. Back in the fall, she was named The Virginia Councilfor Exceptional Children's Teacher of the Year. "She truly loves her students, and treats them with the same careas she would if they were her own children," says Coleman. "In areal sense, her students and her job are her life.".
