The Flood Plains National Park is a project that comes under the Mahaweli River Development scheme and was created in 1984. The widely spread out area is both rich in biodiversity and charm which makes it a great place to explore. This park is also famously known as the Elephant Corridor because it provides a passage for the elephants to migrate between the Wasgamuwa and Somawathiya national parks. This park consists of around 38villus (swampy lands). The park's elevation ranges from 20-60 metres and is quite dry except for the seasonal downpour. These floodplains are complete with diverse ecological systems which contain marshy lands, seasonally flooded grasslands, river channels and swamp forests. The beauty of the Nymphaea plant spread wildly in the water bearing small white flowers with a golden hint is truly breathtaking. Not only that, the pink shades of the Nelumbo Nucifera commonly known as lotus flowers, also dominates the waters making it look like a beautiful flower garden all around. Among the animal inhabitants of the park you would find elephants, wild boars, jungle cats, fishing cats, eastern grey herons and painted snipes. This park is especially important since it plays a vital role in the long-term survival of the elephants in the Mahaweli region; reports have shown that the lives of these elephants are endangered due to various human related activities. It must be taken to heart by all that the sustainability of humankind largely depends on the conservation of Mother Nature and thus the balance in nature must be preserved and each one must take up the responsibility to their part.
