Hauz Khas complex situated in South Delhi is a collection of many structures that include a water tank, an Islamic seminary, a mosque, a tomb and pavilions. It was the part of Siri city founded by Allauddin Khilji. Initially a water reservoir was built here to supply water to the inhabitants of Siri. The name Hauz Khas means 'Royal Tank'. Later several monuments were raised on the southern and eastern banks of the reservoir by Feroz Shah tughlaq between 1352 and 1354 A.D. These include a Madarasa, a small Mosque, a Main tomb for Feroz Shah himself and six domed pavilions. Medusa has an L shaped design stretching to the south and east edges of the reservoir. Its arms measure 249 feet and 453 feet. At The junction of the two arms is built the Tomb of Firoz Shah. The tomb is made in Indo - Islamic architecture style. Like many other structures of Mughal period it is also made of red sandstone and marble. The unique feature of the tomb is the stone railings built at the entrance to the tomb from the south. There are four graves inside the tomb, one of Feroz Shah, two of his sons and one of his grandson's. There is a small mosque at the northern end of the madarsa and a garden on the southern side. This garden has six impressive pavilions with domes of different shapes and sizes.These pavilions are inferred as graves on the basis of inscriptions. A small eight pillared Chattri is another striking structure present in the garden. This royal tank and the surrounding place have now become one of the most beautiful place in Delhi to visit as a result of active development efforts. The beautifully landscaped Deer Park at the entry to the tank has added the aesthetic value of the complex. One can get to see spotted deers, peacocks, rabbits, guinea pigs and a variety of birds around the tank which enhance the beauty of the place. A light and sound show is also organized by the Tourism Department in the evenings.In the 1980s, the surrounding Hauz Khas Village was developed as an upper class residential cum commercial area. The area has many art galleries, exclusive boutiques and restaurants which catches the interest of tourists.
