Floor sanding is commonly used to restore floors to their former glory. It is the process of using an abrasive sanding paper to remove the top layer of a floor. Typically a commmercial grade belt sander is used and works are carried out by professional floor sanding companies. What materials can be sanded? A variety of materials cane sanded including cork, particleboard, timber and parquet. Floor sanding is often used to treat old floors to remove previous coverings or stains. Many flooring manufacturers are now designing their boards specifically with floor sanding in mind at later date in the floors life. By adding a thicker top layer, the boards can be sanded at a later date should then endure excessive wear, soiling or damage they can be restored to their original state. How do you sans a floor? Typically floor sanding is a three stage process. The first stage is preperation. During this stage the floor is checked for protrusions such as nail heads. If found these will be punched down as they can seriously damage the sanding machines. Any staples or tacks that ay have been used to fasten previous coverings will be removed to further reduce the possibility of damage to the sanding machines. Sometimes residue from adhesives will need to be removed as they can clog the papers and running gear of the sanding machines and in the most extreme circumstances actually make the job impossible. After preparation is complete stage 2 begins.The second stage is sanding. A initial cut is done with a coarse grit paper to remove any old costings and to make the floor flat. Any differences in height between boards across the whole or the room will be removed. Areas that can't be reached by the large belt sanders are sanded by an edger. These smaller sanders are designer to get into the corners and harder to reach areas that are not suitable for the belt sanders. For the final finish to the floor a finishing machine is used using a fine paper. After the floor has it is on to stage three. Stage three is sealing. Once all dust and has been cleared from the floor it can be sealed. The sanded floor is costed with a sealant to protect it from traffic and ingress of liquids. Floor sanding really can bring you old floors back to life but its not an easytask and is best left to the professionals.
