There is a rich history surrounding the sport of horse racing. The many horse race tracks throughout the world and across the United States are part of this, and those of New York are part of the scene. The oldest race track in United States history is Saratoga Race Course. Situated in Saratoga Spring Spring, it was inaugurated all the way back in 1863. It is the home to numerous horse races including Grade 1, Grade 2 and Grade 3 events. The Alabama Stakes, the Travers Stakes, the Whitney Handicap and the Woodward Stakes are among some of the most exciting and well-known Grade 1 races held here. Saratoga Race Course is comprised of three tracks contained within each other. There is a 1 1/8th miles dirt track on the outside then a 1 mile turf track follow by an inner turf track of 7 furlongs. Aqueduct Racetrack is part of the landscape of South Ozone Park in Queens. Some of the most exciting and well-known Grade 1 races that are held here include the Carter Handicap, the Cigar Mile Handicap and the Wood Memorial Stakes. Whereas, it is also home to the Grade 2 Gazelle Stakes and the Grade 3 Aqueduct Handicap and the Gotham Stakes. Along with Saratoga Race Course and Belmont Park, the New York Racing Association operates Aqueduct Racetrack. As the only horse race track within the New York City limits, Aqueduct Racetrack is comprised of a 1 1/8th miles dirt track followed by a 1 mile inner dirt track then the innermost 7 furlong and 43 feet turf track. To protect the inner dirt track during races over the winter months, there is a special limestone screening base used on this track. Located in Elmont on Long Island is Belmont Park. It is most well-known as the home of the Belmont Stakes. The Belmont Stakes is the 3rd and final leg of the Triple Crown; due to its distance and intensity, this race has earned the nickname “The Test of the Champion.” Belmont Park has the longest dirt track in the United States at a distance of 1 ½ miles. Inside this main dirt track is a turf track of 1 5/16th miles plus 27 feet followed by the innermost turf track of 1 3/16th miles plus 103 feet. Along with the Belmont Stakes, Belmont Park hosts numerous other horse races including the Acorn Stakes, the Champagne Stakes, the Man o' War Stakes and the Mother Goose Stakes. Finger Lakes Gaming and Race Track is located in the city of Farmington in western New York State. It is home to the New York Breeders' Futurity, the New York Derby, the Wadsworth Memorial Handicap and numerous other horse races. Renovated extensively in 2004, this race track now boasts of a racino. With a casino-style video gaming floor, it increased attendance at Finger Lakes Gaming and Race Track.
