In debuting its new Callaway X Hot driver, Callaway Golf engineers say they have achieved gains of 13 yards. The fast face on X Hot is one piece of the puzzle, though. The X Hot driver has been configured for blistering ball speeds and distance gains thanks to the brand’s powerfully fast and adjustable Speed Frame Face Technology that promotes consistent distance, even on off-centre hits. By decoupling the face performance from the rest of the driver head, Callaway is able to boost ball speed without sacrificing optimum trajectory. The matte grey crown with black face and large, deep profile instils confidence at address, while the traditional Callaway chevron acted as a nice alignment aid in amongst the silent orange and grey colours at the top and bottom of the crown. The new face technology promotes more – and more consistent – distance, even on off-center impacts. The X Hot features Callaway’s thinnest ever casting technology in an all-titanium head and this creates a lighter swing weight and overall configuration. While the white standard Project X Velocity felt a little too light for our liking, the X Hot provided a sweet sensation at impact and explosive feel off the face – a similar trait found in the Callaway X Hot Irons for sale. Another benefit is Draw Bias Progression, which changes the amount of draw bias depending on the loft, allowing golfers to better control sidespin and tune their shot shape. Players with higher lofts can take advantage of higher draw bias for straighter shots, while players with lower lofts can utilize a more neutral Center of Gravity that fits their game. Also featured in the X Hot Driver is the adjustable OptiFit Hosel, which adjusts the face angle in Open, Square or Closed positions to improve accuracy and trajectory, and allows golfers to dial in their preferred look at address. The X Hot Drivers also feature Project X Velocity shafts as the stock offering. Launch was a little lower than ideal and balls were consequently landing with hot feet, but that is nothing that a new shaft or switching up a degree cannot solve. While Callaway would ideally prefer to keep the golf clubs for sale airborne a tad longer, Callaway couldn’t fault forgiveness on off-centre hits and the progressive draw bias that helped keep those ‘squiffy’ swings in play. The X Hot generated decent length and smooth swings with straight shots. If you’re after a slight draw pattern with penetrating trajectory, the X Hot should be of consideration this year.
