Around 170km off Colombo, along the Puttalam strip lies the fishing town of Kalpitiya. This town is important both in the historical sense as well as a being a spot visited by those who love to explore marine life. The continental shelf around the Kalpitiya Peninsula offers the perfect habitat for whales and dolphins making, Kalpitiya a favourite destination for all those wishing to see schools of these majestic animals in their natural environment. The Sperm Whale, the largest toothed variety, can be found in this area together with Spinner Dolphins, from November to April each year when the monsoon season comes to the Western Coast. If you are really lucky you may also see a Blue Whale - the largest of its species. Spinner Dolphins in their hundreds if not thousands are not an uncommon sight in these waters. Those wishing to spot these marine mammals will ideally leave from Alankuda Beach at around 6am and would need to travel for about an hour in order to reach a prime viewing spot. In total be prepared for a three to five hour boat trip. There are many private and resort operated vessels that are licensed to take travellers out for dolphin and whale watching. Visitors are cautioned not to disturb the quiet and serenity of the natural habitat of these animals as they are keenly sensitive to loud noise. It is believed that whilst some of the animals, especially the Blue Whales are residential, the others are migratory and can be viewed on their journey to and from the Arabian Sea to the Bay of Bengal. Whilst in Kalpitiya also make sure to visit the Dutch Fort, participate in some kite surfing – for which the water in and around the peninsula is ideal.
