The media always gets a lot of scrutiny for being too biased when it comes to delivering the news to the general public. Every outlet leans to the left or to the right in one way or another. We, as readers, have gotten used to media bias and have accepted that it’s simply a part of the news. At NewsLab, we’re trying to change that way of thinking. We believe that it’s possible to deliver quality news with little to no bias. How can something like this be achieved? By simply stating the facts and leaving all of the other b.s. at the door. That being said, is bias as horrible as we’re making it out to be. Can Bias Be a Good Thing? Bias, in every day life, is natural. We are human, after all. Frankly, life would be a bit boring without a healthy dose of bias. We all come from different places. We were all raised differently; we all love differently; we even eat differently. To be human is to be an individual. So, in the case of just bias, yes, bias is absolutely fine. Experiences shape who we are and because of those experiences, we’re bound to become a little biased over time. Why Is Media Bias Different? There are journalists and reporters who claim that bias can sometimes make a story. By immersing some of your own emotions into a news story, it will make readers feel something. It will make them feel like they are a part of the story and, in turn, will make them come back for more. This way of thinking is the reason that many Americans are so, unbelievably, uninformed. Emotions make a story entertaining. They bring feelings into the words that are being read. The problem here is that the news should be void of feelings. They have no place in a simple recounting of facts. Emotions and bias are meant for op-ed pieces and Harry Potter books, not for the daily news. How Do We Demand Unbiased News? Bias in the news replaces and masks important pieces of information. Readers should be smart enough and respected enough to form their own opinions after reading an unbiased news story. They shouldn’t have to lean on what Fox News or CNN News thinks about a particular issue. If you lean left, good for you! If you lean right, fantastic! Whatever your opinions are, get to them on your own. The only way unbiased news will simply become ‘the news’ is if consumers start demanding just the facts. The news industry is still an industry. It’s still a business where money needs to be made. If consumers keep absorbing the bias and subscribing to, watching, and reading the news on biased news websites, we will never see a positive change in the news industry. What’s your take on unbiased news? Would you like to see more of it or do you like to see a little bias in your dailies?
