We all know Cisco for their network dominance for as long as we can remember, has the game changed? With Cisco now in the forefront for servers as well as networking can they dominate all aspects of the infrastructure. Believe it or not Cisco has been in the server market for 3-4 years now and it is still not widely known, that is down to a few things really like brand awareness, stuck in the past that IBM, Dell and HP are your only options for servers. Well that has now changed, you may be shocked to know that in the short time of manufacturing servers Cisco has climbed the ladder to be number 2 in the world for blade servers! I will repeat that in 3 years Cisco has overtaken Dell and IBM to be number 2 in the world market. Now has that been through huge amounts of money being spent on marketing and advertising everywhere that Cisco sell servers? No. As most people are unaware of the fact, mainly the servers speak for themselves, the benefits of them and the functionality they bring to the table. Features Below are some features I have pointed out that seem to be a good selling point for the servers, these are not all of the features just the ones I like the best. • Repurpose a server in around 3 mins • Security and policy are on a VM level not a server level • Service application times done in hours • The servers are plug and play • The server manager is a chip not software and is very powerful • Built with virtualisation inmind • Two flavours blade servers or rack mount Now these are just a summary of some of the benefits to highlight of Cisco servers otherwise this article would be very big and that's what Cisco data sheets are for. So to sum up, yes Cisco do servers and seem to be storming ahead. I mean if you had a server refresh, an infrastructure refresh or just looking around for a possible project would you not consider using a manufacturer whose previous products are bullet proof?! If they are price matching HP then cost won't be the reason, maybe that is why they have risen so fast because its on features, benefits and functionality and not on cost now to compare between servers. Late to the game? Possibly not, think about it. They have seen other vendors mistakes and issues and they can learn from them to then avoid these mistakes themselves. One last thing before I go, they are Cisco's own development and not re-badged servers from someone else.
