Most modern houses feature a wide range of halogen bulbs in anything from desktop lights through to overhead light fittings in kitchens and bathrooms. Do not get me wrong halogens are great and they give out lots of light, but in doing so they also give out massive amounts of heat and lots of energy to provide you with that light. Neither of these factors is a positive point as you will know if you have lots of halogen lights inset into your kitchen ceiling, then there will be a considerable warming effect if they are left on for an hour or so. Also the heat that they give out does not make them at all child friendly and in particular it is very easy for children to get burnt by low-lying halogen lamps such as desk lamps or standard lamps. They also use massive amounts of energy and with the average bulb used in the kitchen being 50 W if you have ten of them set in the ceiling that's 500W! So it is not hard to see where energy savings could be made if you change the bulbs. You will be pleased to know a switch to LED bulbs removes all of these problems. LED bulbs are the new kid on the block when it comes to the latest form of lighting. Whilst they were introduced a couple of years back they were initially perceived as having a much higher cost than conventional bulbs and giving out a "funny" looking light. However many things have changed and now the LED bulbs have dropped down considerably in price and the light they give out is of a very high quality and colour and far more natural looking. They are also virtually cool to the touch, which makes them particularly child friendly and so they can be used for low-level applications. Also unlike conventional energy bulbs they come on instantly and require no warm up period. The reason that they are cool to the touch is that they use far, far less energy than a conventional bulb and in fact they only use around 10% of the energy that conventional bulbs use or less. To demonstrate the energy saving that they would give you, given the above situation of having 500 W of lighting in your kitchen if you were to switch to LED bulbs you would only be using approximately 50W of electricity to get out exactly the same amount of light. Clearly this means that by using LED bulbs you will save a massive amount on your electricity bill.
