The mottled hues and colors of a marble sink adds an exotic touch of luxurious beauty to any bathroom or kitchen. Not only is marble enchanting, it is also durable and sturdy. Over time, the marble sink's surface can lose some of its original shine and become marred with stains and scratches. With a little work you can clean and refinish a marble sink to restore its original glow. Instructions as follows: Firstly, wash the marble surface to remove mineral deposits, soap scum and other debris. Use a damp cloth and hot water to wipe down the top, sides and bowl of the sink. If water alone doesn't remove the grime, use a commercial marble cleaner meant to deep-clean the stone without damaging its surface. Secondly, remove tougher stains and rust that aren't typically removed with hot water or marble cleaner. Organic stains, such as those from the dye in mouthwash, can be removed by wiping the area with a cloth soaked in hydrogen peroxide. Clean stubborn stains by soaking a paper towel in hydrogen peroxide and leaving it on the spot for 24 hours. Clean rust stains, caused by corrosion of your sink's faucet, using a commercial rust remover. Thirdly, mask off the edges of the marble sink with masking tape where the sink connects to your bathroom wall. Cover all painted walls and non-marble surfaces, creating a masked margin of two inches around the sink. Fourthly, wipe down the marble sink with a dry cloth and allow to air dry completely. Depending on your local climate, this may take up to 24 hours. Once dry, coat the marble sink with a marble sealant to help repel water and lock out moisture and mold from the marble surface. Allow the sealant to dry according to the manufacturer's product-specific guidelines. Fifthly, apply a marble wax. Coat evenly, avoiding leaving thick globs of wax in the corners or edges of the sink. Allow to dry, then buff to a shine with a soft, lint-free cloth. Move the cloth vigorously in a circular motion, pushing gently against the surface of the sink to remove excess dried wax. Tips & Warnings Examples of marble cleaners include Homax's Magic Complete Marble Cleaner and StoneTech's Revitalizer Stone Cleaner Spray. Examples of marble sealant include Lundmark Wax Company's Marble & Granite Rejuvenator and Weiman Corian Polish. Marble waxes usually are made of Carnauba or synthetic waxes and add a glossy sheen to the marble while boosting its color and veining. Example products include Bellinzoni Paste Wax, Goddard's Granite and Marble Polish and Marble Polisher's Marble Infusion. The final waxing process not only restores the sink's gloss and color, but also helps to mask and smooth over any light grooves, etches and scrapes that may have marred the surface of the sink during everyday use.
