In Kawasaki’s disease, the walls of heart arteries including coronary arteries are severely inflamed. This disease is common in children below 5 years belonging to Chinese or Japanese ethnicity. The cause of this disease is unknown and a combination of genetic and environmental factors is believed to trigger this disease. With prompt medical attention, this disease is treatable and children can be cured without any severe coronary damage. Treatment of Kawasaki’s disease:-Treatment should begin as early as possible to prevent the complications. • Intravenous administration of Gamma globulin to prevent coronary damage or aneurysms. • Aspirin- to reduce pain and inflammation of joints and to prevent clot formation by thinning the blood. • Anticoagulant drugs like clopidogrel (Plavix), warfarin (Coumadin) and heparin can also be administered with aspirin. • Cortisone medicines • NSAIDs like as ibuprofen (Advil) and naproxen (Aleve) for joint pain. • Plasma exchange (plasmapheresis):-It is a procedure in which a patient’s plasma is removed from the blood. With plasma removal, antibodies and proteins that trigger immune system response are also removed. Protein containing fluids are used to fill the gap. This treatment is used when patient does not respond to aspirin or gamma globulin treatment. • Coronary artery angioplasty-to remove the blockages in clogged arteries • Stent placement;-Implanting device in clogged artery to prevent blockages • Coronary artery bypass graft. Rerouting blood flow through grafting of alternative artery usually cut from leg or arm. Kawasaki’s disease not responding to aspirin and gamma globulin is extremely fatal. More research is being carried out on TNF (Tumor necrosis factor) blocking procedure. TNF is a molecule which is closely associated with autoimmune response of the body. TNF blocker drugs like are infliximab (Remicade) and etanercept (Enbrel) are under the scrutiny. The drug Pentoxifylline (Trental) is also being studied to cure the severe cases.
