Jeopardy, one of the best and longest running game shows of all time, has remained the most popular game-show for decades with its host Alex Trebek. In the game show the host gives the three contestants the answer to the question and the contestants have to give what the question would have been to lead to the answer. In essence, Alex Trebek gives the contestants a description of the answer, just like a riddle. An example question might be "TOPSY & SIMON LEGREE ARE BOTH CHARACTERS IN THIS BESTSELLING NOVEL". The answer to this riddle would be "WHAT IS 'UNCLE TOM'S CABIN'?" How has such an easy and simple concept managed to beat out countless other game shows as the most popular game show on TV? The thing that separates Jeopardy from other game shows is that it is not based on luck or chance but knowledge and skill. If the game was just a bunch of specific questions asked over and over it wouldn't be any fun. To mix it up they ask questions in the opposite direction. The host first gives an answer and the contestants must give the corresponding question that was answered by the host. This makes the game more fun and allows the host to ask questions that aren't straight-forward, they can be more abstract. The game is also mixed up by throwing in the Daily Double allowing a player to bet it all on a single riddle. The riddles are all organized into categories as well to give players the opportunity to select the topic of the riddle they would like to receive. The game poses questions in a very interesting way that exercises your brain in a way most questions don't. The game forces you to connect the dots between the categories, the hints given by the host, and what you know. This is at the very essence of riddles, they aren't just a test of knowledge but also your problem solving skills and how dynamically you can think and apply your own personal knowledge and experience. This game demonstrates that riddles are not only good for the brain but people love them and can't get enough. This is evident by the success of the show when it switched over from a weekly and nighttime program to the daily syndicated version that still airs. Riddles are an important and popular part of our culture to this day, as is made evident by the success of Jeopardy. Riddles are a brain exercise and should be used for the benefits they can bring.
