Two Steps to Follow when Server Shopping

Computers
Finding the right server system for your office can be a bit of a tricky process, especially if you don’t know much about servers to begin with. So, if you’re thinking about upgrading your office’s server system, this guide is for you!

First Step: Evaluate you Office’s Data Center

Before you really begin your search, you should make a quick trip to your office’s data center where the server will reside. Take some time to really survey the room. How much space does it offer? Will there be enough space for your Systems Administrator to work in with a server system in the room as well? Take some time to measure the dimensions of the room and go from there. You should be sure to also check the number of outlets the room contains, as you server will, obviously, need to be plugged in (while this seems like common sense, it still needs to be stated). You should also pay attention to the ventilation of the room. Will your new server be cool enough in that room? If the ventilation system isn’t that great, you’ll want to be sure to keep an eye out for a server that has an exceptional cooling system than most so that it can effectively cool itself without ever having to rely on an outside ventilation source.

If you’re a small business, and don’t have a very big data center, or don’t have a data center at all, you’ll obviously want to look for a server that will not take up a lot of space. You’ve got a couple options here: you can get a tower server, which look very similar to regular desktop computer towers, or you can opt for a rack-mount server. Rack-mount servers are nice because they are scalable vertically, so they don’t take up too much floor space.

Second Step: Evaluate the Features your Office Needs in a Server

It is important to find a server that is both powerful enough to handle what you need it to handle, and expandable so that it can easily grow as your business grows. Expandability allows you to keep the server for a much longer period of time than before. A good server will also offer a lot of storage space, as well. It will provide an excellent amount of RAM, as well as several high-capacity hard drives. It is important for your office’s server to have a lot of storage space because one of a server’s main duties is to help store all of your business’s important information. A decent processor (sometimes more than one) is also important to your server’s overall performance. The processor acts like the brain of the server, controlling all of the processes done through the server. So, in order to perform the programs and applications it needs to, a server must have a strong, reliable processor. Without one, your server will not perform the way that you need it to.

Example

A good example of a reliable, space-saving and powerful server is the Dell PowerEdge T620. This server can be used in either a tower or 5U rack-mount configuration, saving valuable floor space. It utilizes an Intel Xeon E5-2600 processor and boasts up to 768GB of DDR3 RAM. It is designed to grow as your company grows, and most of its components and applications can be expanded if necessary. The T620 is an excellent server to consider, and it would make a great addition to your office.
