Eccotopia, Ltd’s Julian Moses and Arial Haskins return from Texas visit with unprecedented order for the company’s Megafolia product. Julian Moses, CEO and Arial Haskins, Director of Operations at sustainable forestation company Eccotopia, Ltd. have returned to South Africa following a week-long reforestation assessment at a natural gas drilling site in southern Texas with a firm order for an unprecedented quantity of its Megafolia trees. Both Mr. Moses and Mr. Haskins had been invited to provide their insight into how issues arising from the utilization of hydraulic fracturing could best be mitigated. The southern Texas site is operated by a US oil major and, after extensive fracking-based operations at several wells, has manifested signs of topsoil contamination and a significant reduction in the availability of freshwater locally. The unnamed oil company extended the invitation to Eccotopia after being made aware of a number of successful reforestation projects conducted by the company on the African continent. Mr.Moses said, “Our evaluation of the very substantial site was completed within seven days. It is evident that extensive drilling operations have caused significant damage to the local environment and, consequently, the oil company concerned has faced considerable criticism from local environmental groups and parts of the local media. Our assessment indicated that a meaningful percentage of the damage could be mitigated by reforestation using our Megafolia trees but it could take several years before the site is returned to its original condition.” Mr. Haskins said, “Eccotopia is being asked to provide 20,000 Megafolia trees that will be used to help expedite the restoration of the site’s environmental balance. Of course, it would be best if this type of damage was not inflicted in the first place but the US is committed to ending its reliance on foreign-sourced fossil fuels so it is drilling at home. We want to help contain the damage.” The Megafolia© tree has been shown to be uniquely able to utilize waste mining water as the trees are cultivated, creating a welcome solution for the inherent mining waste water issues throughout the Republic of South Africa. Megafolia© trees are characteristically suited for the process of phytoremediation, as they are able to flourish utilizing polluted mining water which is an abundant by-product of the mining industry.
