Mark and Mindy met the old fashioned way. They were hanging out with their own individual friends at a bar one night when they noticed each other across the room. As the night got longer, and their glances became more frequent, with enough drinks in him to conjure up the nerves to introduce himself, Mark made his way over. Mark was a successful contractor who occasionally dated but spent more time hanging with his friends, co-workers, and family. Mindy was always in demand. She was one of the guys, easy to talk with, a huge sports fan, and of course, a former cheerleader. Mindy worked as a secretary for a major law firm, and if you didn't know her title, you would assume she was running the office and prosecuting cases herself. There is nothing contrived about Mark. He is straightforward and direct. He introduced himself, told her that she sparkled, and asked if he could buy her a drink. Mindy blushed, said she'd take a beer of any kind, and the rest is history. They talked that night about family, favorite teams, and careers. They arranged a date for the next week. After going out for four months, and becoming very close and getting comfortable with each other, Mark, who was not ready to move in together or propose, wanted to do something special. Because their relationship was so genuine, there weren't many fancy dates. Both Mark and Mindy are salt of the earth people and most of their time together was at bars, games, around friends, or something else relaxed and not overly romantic. For Mindy's birthday, Mark decided to do something grand. He arranged for a limo service to pick her up, have flowers, chocolate, and roses in the car, and take her to his apartment. At his apartment, completely cleaned and decorated for her birthday, they drank a nice bottle of wine. He gave her a present, a beautiful new watch. Then the limo service returned, and ushered them to one of the best restaurants in town. They dined on crab cakes, perfectly cooked steak, and the most delicious creme brulee that either of them had ever tasted. The limo service returned after a long and fabulous meal and took them to the prettiest vista in town. There they talked, held hands, and enjoyed the scenery, each others company, and a bottle of champagne. After the limo service dropped them back at Mark's place they celebrated how lucky they were to have found each other. The beauty of it, from Mark's perspective, was how perfect she was without ever asking questions about rushing their relationship. For Mindy, having someone so caring and thoughtful was divine. It was a very special night. Both agreed at the end of it that while wine and cheese was great once in a while, they looked forward to returning to beer and peanuts while being surrounded by friends the next time they hung out.
