The 23rd edition of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting referred to as 'CHOGM 2013' will be held in Sri Lanka from the 10th to the 17th of November 2013 amidst a gathering of a greater proportion of Commonwealth countries. Leaders of the Commonwealth agreed that Sri Lanka would be the venue for this prestigious yet important gathering at a meeting held in Port of Spain in the year 2009. The meeting which is traditionally held once in every two years witnesses the leaders of all countries belonging to the Commonwealth share their views on a wide variety of topics that concern both the Commonwealth and the world at large. CHOGM was introduced at a session which was held in Singapore in 1971 and a classification of this nature was made with an objective of showcasing the presidents and prime ministers of the Commonwealth on one common stage. CHOGM 2013 is jointly organised by the Commonwealth Secretariat and the Government of Sri Lanka and will aim to establish a firm footing for leaders of the association to discuss, plan and implement initiatives and policies that will influence the Commonwealth and contribute towards a more stable global economy. Numerous events are scheduled to take place alongside the meeting in key locations in the country which will aim to add value to the outcome of CHOGM 2013. The Commonwealth Business Forum is one such example which will be held in Colombo between the 12th to the 14th of November. The objectives as unveiled by HE the President Mahinda Rajapaksa will focus on increasing investment in the country, to promote and expose the investment potential in the country to the world and to pave the way for investment to take shape out of Sri Lanka. Discussions at the People's Forum in Hikkaduwa will be centred on promoting civil society organisations. Greater interaction and association amongst the civil society, the private sector and the government together with the youth is another goal of this meeting. The Youth Forum which is an integral part of the meeting will take place at the Hambantota International Conference Hall with an aim of creating a sound base on which the youth of this country may prosper. Based on the concept "Sri Lankan Village", the Commonwealth Festival will highlight the traditions and surroundings of a rural village and will display large volumes of handicrafts in the likes of pottery and wood carvings coupled with Kandyan dancing and a host of food stalls. The event will be held at the Vihara Maha Devi Park.
