October 15, 2013– In September of 2012, Pastor Greg Bartlett relocated his young family from their home in the southeast Edmonton area to Athabasca, Alberta. He wasn’t looking for a better neighborhood or a more lucrative job. Instead, he was looking to make a difference in the community by reaching out to families through a local church. With just four other families in attendance, Bartlett started Northlight Baptist Church just south of Athabasca on Highway 663. On September 8th, the young church celebrated its first anniversary with ninety people in attendance. “With God’s help and with the help of his people here, I endeavor to literally preach the gospel to every creature and train those whom the Lord saves to be disciple-makers,” Bartlett says. The church ministers to many young families with children and offers a children’s program on Sundays and Thursday evenings in addition to the adult service. Pastor Bartlett describes his decision to enter church ministry as a direct answer to prayer. “When I began praying, I was dead-set against going into the ministry fulltime,” he says. “However, I prayed every day that the Lord would direct my life. After one week, I had a fire in my heart to go.” Based on that calling, he began training for the ministry at Bob Jones University where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Bible, a Master of Arts in Bible, and a Master of Divinity. Following his education, Bartlett spent some time teaching at Foundation Baptist College, a ministry of Meadowlands Baptist Church in southeast Edmonton. While there, he met four families who were traveling 2 hours south from Athabasca to attend services. Their need for a local church ultimately led to Bartlett’s decision to start Northlight Baptist. Northlight Baptist Church recently hosted Dr. Bart Gragtmans, who preached four services. Pastor Bartlett looks forward to hosting other visiting pastors as well, as he seeks to share the message of the Bible with people in the Athabasca community.
