For those looking to improve the atmosphere of their next football tailgate or Super Bowl party, look no further than creating a football betting board. A betting board is extremely easy to make, and, because the betting taking place is nothing more than a game of chance, bettors do not need to have extensive football knowledge (or a fantasy team) in order to participate. The betting board is essentially a lottery, where the final score of the game determines who takes home the winnings. To create your football betting board, start with a writing implement and a ruler. Use a sturdy piece of industrial poster board that does not bend, rip, or tear easily. The board, most importantly, needs to have the resiliency to withstand many different people writing their names on it, and be hung in a place where everyone can see it throughout the game. First, draw a large square, one that is big enough for 100 boxes, 10 boxes across by 10 boxes down. Leave space on the outside margins of the square, because this is where numbers indicating the game’s predicted final score will go. Make each box large enough for betters to legibly write their names inside. Do not write the numbers on the margins until after bettors have picked their boxes. Players are not allowed to pick their own number, otherwise numbers ending in sevens and tens would always be the first to go. The idea here is to leave the game completely up to the forces of chance. Now, fill up the boxes. There is no strategy here, just be sure to instruct bettors to write their names in the boxes. Leaving empty boxes creates the possibility that nobody will win the bet, so fill up all the boxes if possible. Once participants have written their names into the boxes, write the numbers 1 through 9 on small pieces of paper and drop them into a hat. Pull out the first slip and write that number in the margin just outside of the uppermost row on the left hand side of the betting board. Continue drawing numbers out of the hat, placing the numbers in the margins until every vertical row has a corresponding number. Then, place the numbered pieces of paper back in the hat and repeat the process, this time placing numbers in the margins above the uppermost horizontal row, so that row going across has a number. Wait until the conclusion of the game to determine the winner of the betting board. To find out who won the board, take the score of the game – for the purposes of this article, pretend the score was 28 to 24. Find the horizontal column with the number 8 in it. Trace your finger down the betting board until you reach the box in the row marked by the number 4. The bettor who appears in this box is the person who wins the bet and takes home the winnings. There are many different bets one can arrange with a betting board. Try upping the ante a bit and checking for the winner after the first quarter, halftime, or third quarter, offering bettors the opportunity to throw additional money into the pot. If the score does not change, a player may have the opportunity to win more than one bet. Tip: If you are filling more than one box on your football grid for yourself, choose boxes in a diagonal pattern (as opposed to boxes in the same vertical or horizontal row) to give yourself a better chance of winning the pot.
