Sadness is a part of being human, a natural reaction to painful circumstances.Deoression, however, is a physical illness with many more symptoms than an unhappy mood. Feeling tired and disinterested always can be sign of depression. If your unhappy feelings do not go away and if you notice a loss of interest in many things you once loved doing then you probably are depressed. In Ayurveda depression are considered to result from disturbed or vitiated doshas in Brain. Any of the three DoshasVata, Pitta or Kapha can give rise to depression. In case of depression due to Vata,PranaVayu in Brain and Heart can be provoked by a variety of factorslike excess of travel, irregular lifestyle, lack of sleep, excess of talking, excess use of phone, excess intake of dried, frozen or microwaved foods. Working in night or awakening in night can also be the cause of Vatadepression.The symptoms of Vata depression are tremendous anxiety, guilt, irrational fear, phobias. Insomnia or restless sleep is a classic feature. Medicines like Bramhighritam for internal use, Bramhi oil to be massaged over scalp, Sirodhara, oil enema( vasti) and Nasyam are very effective methods. In case of depression due to Pitta.Sadhak Pitta in the Brainis disturbed by violence, over ambition, verbal abuse, alcohol and other addictives, excessive white sugar during childhood, excessive studying and overwork. Symptoms of pitta depression are excessive anger, very easily irritated, irrational and sometimes violent. Herbs like Amla, Ashwagandha, shankhpushpi, sandalwood helps to balance pitta. In case of depression due to Kapha, Tarpakkapha in the brain is provoked by sleeping in day time, over eating, consumption of oily and heavy food, lack of exercise. It mostly originates in homes where parents have some degree of kapha depression and child is encouraged to overeat, gain weight and stuff emotions. Symptoms are characterised by heaviness, lethargy, dullness and excess sleep. Useful herbs are Triphala, guggul, Jatamansi, guduchi, brahmi etc. Shirodhara is a purifying and rejuvenating therapy to eliminate toxins and relieve stress and any ill effects on the central nervous system. It is a unique form of ancient therapy of pouring oil on the forehead from a specific height and for a specific period continuously and rhythymically allowing the oil to run through the scalp and hair. As you get back to your good self, it is important to have a positive outlook towards everything, be active, social, eat healthy, avoid alcohols, engage in hobbies, meet and interact with friends.
