Exactly what does your music group could be seen as? I get asked which a lot! I l always often say we're an indie group. Most of us have not a clue the things i mean. I have a blank stare rather than much else until I elaborate which we seem to be a mix of such and such band. Indie means different things to different people, and that's what I'll explore in this post. Independent and indie basically mean the same thing. Since classical music we have seen independent musicians. This is for two main reasons, either they planned to control their own personal destiny's or record labels didn't rely on them. Most of the time independent artists don't care what record labels think. Asylum records gave independent musicians their very own voice. The usual scenario is that executives control the songs, not within the indie arena. The eighties brought the punk esthetic. This independent type of music started being a pure rebellion, then major labels took over and turned it right into a trend. Alternative rock from the nineties was another method of independent music. They were striving for something totally new and seeking to escape the hair metal from the eighties. A whole new type of music called grunge originated from that scene. Grunge was the amalgamation of pop melodies together with the ferocity of punk. Again the labels bought up grunge bands and sold these to the mainstream. A generic type of alternative music was offered on the masses after Kurt Cobain's death. Then a new form of sound emerged. They were starting to consider it indie rock. Bands all over the country started playing a somewhat softer, more melodic design of music. Bands like 'Death Cab for Cutie' begun to tour the continent without any record label support. Slowly since they always perform the record labels caught on and begun to buy and sell the indie rock sound. Do good indie bandsstill exist? That's a tricky question to answer. One important thing I could saw is the fact there is no guessing what is going to be popular next. http://www.chasingmars.com
