Here at AFAB Precision Machining, we are proud to use a variety of CNC machining mills and lathes. CNC, short for Computer Numerical Control, is a modern machining method used to perform a wide range of both simple and complex tasks. Here is a brief history of CNC machining. Before the invention of CNC, machining and metalwork fabrication was performed by numerical controlled machines, or NC for short. These early machines were designed and developed in the 1940’s and 50’s by a man named John T. Parsons. Parsons collaborated with MIT and the US Air force to develop a cost effective way to manufacture aircraft parts. NC machines were effective and became the industry standard over the course of a decade. Fast forward a few decades to 1967, where the concept of computer controlled machining began to take hold. Major developments in the future of machining came about in 1972 with the evolution of CNC machining. CAD (Computer Aided Design) and CAM (Computer Aided Machining) were introduced and revolutionized the world of machining. CNC machines were wildly efficient and effective and had become the industry standard.
