Closet vs. a Dresser. Pros and Cons.

Home Improvement,Interior Design
In an ideal world, we would never have to choose between a closet and a dresser! For in that ideal world, we have a walk-in closet with drawers, and shelves, dressers, wardrobes, and a shoe wall to boot! If you are looking for just that, Organized Interiors can make your walk-in wishes come true—but until then, when forced to choose, here are a few pros and cons of closet vs. dresser!

Closet
Pros
• You have the ability to hang things up! Clothes have breathing room and stay in better shape along with a lot fewer wrinkles! Clothes can be preserved in garment bags to extend the life and their delicate nature ex. formal wear, wedding dress, silk, etc.
• You can keep your clothing and accessories well organized. By adding elements such as shoe racks, accessory bins, lingerie chests, and even a chest of drawers—you can give all things a place where you know they belong, easy to find for the next time you wish to wear it, and you know it will be kept in great condition as it is being stored properly instead of crammed somewhere it doesn’t belong nor fit!
• You can see a variety of options to wear all hanging in plain sight. If you are lucky enough to have a walk-in closet, this is further magnified as you can envision complete outfits including shoes, belts, handbags, and accessories. You will find you make use of more than just a few items you tend to wear over and over again in rotation as you will remember more of what you actually have!
• You will be less of a hoarder! When you are able to see what you have, you tend to try on more items and keep a mental checklist of clothing inventory—fits, doesn’t fit, outdated, destroyed, etc. By doing this you can constantly make decisions of what needs to go to donation or garbage!

Cons
• Space is limited. When you purchase your home, the closet space is predetermined unless you do a custom build. While you may have the luxury of walk-in closet(s) in your master suite, most bedrooms have a more restricted space forcing excess clothing to be jammed together causing wear and tear damage, less breathing space for items causing destruction, and the infamous closet rod sag. Older homes may not even come equipped with closets, forcing the addition of bulky wardrobes to be added to the room leaving less living space for your family!
• Fixed location. Since most closets are a fixed feature, built into your wall space, you do not have the ability to merely move them when redecorating without major construction. Dressers allow you to change the look, size, and location of the storage space to update the look of any room.

Dresser
Pros
• Organization is readily available. Due to the different shapes, sizes, and wardrobe options, you are able to select a piece that best addresses your collection of clothing. If you tend to keep a lot of delicate items such as lingerie, you may want to purchase a lingerie chest that allows multiple small drawers for small items. If you require a piece that doubles as a clothing storage unit and end table or TV stand, the possibilities are endless. You can spread your collection around the room in disguised locations that best make use of the space you have available.
• Your dresser is readably replaceable! Unlike your closet, your dresser can grow or shrink with the number of items you have to house. Once you go from singlehood to married life you may wish to update sizing, or turn that nursery into a toddler’s room simply by changing the storage pieces in the room. A wide range of options allows you to choose the shape, size, and function it serves best for your space.
• Mobile and mendable! Don’t get attached to your dresser, as it’s not attached to your space! Feel free to move, paint, replace, and refinish pieces to give your room a makeover. Simple changes such as a new coat of paint or colour change can freshen up any room or add a vintage piece such as a Victorian armoire or chest to set the tone of the overall room!
• Can become an heirloom piece. If you have invested in a sturdy, timeless piece, you can always hand it down the family tree to hold sentiment (and stuff!) in your offspring’s future home!

Cons
• Bulky dressers take up precious living space in smaller bedrooms. In older homes, bedrooms may be quite small in size so you may be limited to what furniture can fit along with the bed.
• Can’t see your clothing, reduces choices and results in over usage of some items, and under use of others. When items are not visible, we tend to gravitate the to the top items in the drawer, starting a vicious cycle of wear, wash, repeat leading to increased wear and tear on the same few things. Unless you are vigilant about rotating items, you also may forget what you even have following the old adage, ‘out of sight out of mind’. This can also lead to the thought process, ‘I have nothing to wear’ resulting in the purchase of need, be it not needed items, and the continuation of overstuffing and hording and…
• Overstuffing of drawers causes items to get wrinkled and wrecked if they get caught in edges or hinges. Pretty self-explanatory! Make sure to only use the space allotted, fold clothes gently, and throw out those items not used but that are taking up space.
