In order to ensure a fun-filled houseboat adventure, here are some things you should consider. |
Pack the essentials.
The first thing you have to do is to review the inventory list of your houseboat rental company. This way, you will know the things you must bring and not to bring. After doing so, think of the things that you will need for your houseboat trip that aren't in the inventory list of your rental company.
Bring items that everyone will use such as toothpaste, sunscreen, shampoo, conditioner, sun tan lotion, etc. These items will be shared among the group and will reduce the amount of luggage you're going to bring. Although your room has enough space for all your gears, keep in mind that you still have to pack and unpack them as well.
Let everyone bring their own easy-to-carry bag type that contains their personal items. In case you're taking your trip in summer, then you'll have to bring a couple of shirts and shorts, bathing suits, a pair of pajamas and long sleeves for the night that you may also use to cover yourself from sunburns. You don't have to bring your cosmetic items along such as curling irons, make up, etc. Each person must also bring their sunglasses with them. These things must be included in their own personal bags. Consider bringing board games, puzzles, cards etc. so you have something to do at night.
Plan your meals.
If you have different families sharing with the cooking job, let them buy their own ingredients for the meal they are going to prepare. You may assign one person to buy all the food and beverages you will share, then divide its cost and gather the money.
This task requires a lot of planning and organization. Dealing with this job also lets you have food issues such as forgetting some key ingredients and having excess supplies caused by lack of planning. A thing you can do to avoid this is to plan specific meals and splitting its cost. You may let everyone buy beverages of their own.
Bringing key ingredients from home or preparing your food in advance lets you save a large amount of money. This way, you may avoid buying them for the second time around. You may try to prepare your food at home and just freeze them in foil containers. Buy meat at home, put them in a freezer, pack them in Styrofoam coolers, put some dry ice at its top, name and label the cooler and tape it with a duct tape. Remember that some boats have small ovens so try to bring just small pans.
Keep your meals simple. Most houseboats don't have that much space in the kitchen and only one person can cook comfortably at a time. Also have a varied menu. Not all people want to eat just pasta salad for breakfast, dinner and lunch.
For breakfast, scrambled eggs, fruits, biscuits and pancakes usually work. Any food that you can make a large amount in may serve as your breakfast. People, particularly children tend to eat a lot more when on a houseboat trip and diets are usually neglected. And for lunch, you may buy cheese strips, bread, meats and allow everyone to prepare their sandwiches.
Remember to bring everything for your trip. Most people tend to forget important condiments such as salt and pepper, sugar, butter, spices, etc. never forget to bring a sharp knife for your cooking and also, a first aid kit.
Maximize your comfort level.
A lot of houseboats don't provide linens unless you have a luxury houseboat. Thus, you must bring with you some bath and hand towels, pillows, blankets, sheets and face clothes.
Assign each person to bring a specific color of towel and face cloths. This way, you will not be confused on what belongs to whom. You must also bring extra dish cloths and some rolls of paper towels.
Bring sleeping bags even in summer for it provides more level of comfort and may be easily put away during the day. Also have with you your own pillow to maximize your level of comfort and it also gives you a more homey feeling.
