The ultimate goal of an organization is to achieve good revenue. A senior level executive is the one who drives the company to achieve this goal. The organization gives full responsibility to a senior executive to take important decisions because of the vast experience he/she possesses. But sometimes these senior management employees are appointed just on the basis on their CV without conducting a background check on them. These decisions can go against the company if the senior executive is involved in any kind of corporate fraud. There were few names in the news of the senior executives like Scott Thompson, Ex-CEO of Yahoo, Ronald Zarrella, Ex-COO of Bausch & Lomb, Amway's India CEO William S. Pinckney etc who were found guilty of either fudging their educational qualifications or getting involved in corporate frauds. These frauds could have been avoided by conducting Executive screening on these employees. Executive background check involves various verifications like criminal record verification, previous employment verification, reference check etc. Reference check is one of the important checks of executive screening. The reference checks include feedbacks from the past colleagues about the employee. Revelations related to conduct at workplace and overall conduct help in getting hang of the person's bent of mind. Feedback on such aspects is best given by past colleagues. The CV of an employee would not contain his behavioral details like attitude towards his subordinates or his conduct towards the female employees. With the help of reference checks the organization can get to know about such details of the senior executive which otherwise they cannot. Apart from the behavioral details, the organization can also fetch information about the employee’s knowledge and skills from the people who have observed him. Senior hierarchical positions in an Organization demand for reference checks conducted in a very different manner as compared to the check conducted at a junior level. This in itself speaks volumes about the importance of reference checks. For instance a candidate who is being appointed has a history of misconduct with his fellow female employees in the previous company; the Organization will not be able to get the information without doing a reference check on the candidate. If the organization is not able to get the information of the conduct of an employee through executive screening from the previous organization there is a chance that the same behavior could be seen in the new organization as well.
