Slate is a durable stone that wears down slowly. This slow wear makes slate effective on floors--especially outdoors, where a combination of heavy use and weather can damage less sturdy tile materials. Unlike slate paving stones, slate tiles are thin and require a solid, level surface for installation. A concrete or wooden patio or porch is the ideal location for laying slate tiles as they have the strength necessary to not only hold the weight of the tiles, but to create a non-flexible subsurface that keeps the tiles from cracking. Instructions as follows: Firstly, sweep the tiling surface with a broom to remove loose dirt and debris. Remove ingrained dirt by scrubbing at the dirty areas with a pH-neutral cleaner and scrub brush. Secondly, place a level bar onto the tiling surface starting at the edge and check beneath the bar for high or low areas. Mark these areas with a piece of chalk for correction. Thirdly, level the tiling surface with a concrete grinder to lower rises in a concrete surface or a floor sander for wooden surfaces. Move the grinder or sander in small circles over the higher area until it is level with the surrounding surface. Use a self-leveling compound to fill in low areas. Mix the compound according to the supplier or manufacturer's instructions and then pour into the dips in the tiling surface. Spread the compound with a trowel so that it's level with the surrounding surfaces and allow it to dry overnight. Fourthly, cover the surface with exterior-grade plywood. The plywood provides a solid, non-flexible seamless surface for the tile installation. Measure the tiling surface with a measuring tape and cut the board to fit, using a table saw. Secure the plywood to the surface by screwing it into place with 1-inch wood screws and a screwdriver. Fifthly, create a guideline for your first tile row 1/8 inch from any exterior wall or at the edge of your tiling surface. Snap a chalk line spanning from one end of the surface to the other across an edge by placing two ends of a chalk line at opposing ends of the tiling surface, raising it slightly and dropping it against the surface to create a straight line. Sixthly, lay your first slate tile, beginning at a corner of the tiling surface marked by the guideline. Butter the rear of the slate tile with thinset mortar and a trowel, spreading the mortar across the entire tile surface, and place the tile onto the guideline. Place a tile spacer at the edges of the tile and then butter and place the second tile in the row, butting it against the first with the spacer creating a joint between the two. Continue placing tiles in the row, using the spacers to maintain uniform joints between the tiles. Finally, let me have a short conclusion.
