Asia World Capital Group says that aggressive pricing strategies by rivals are responsible for slippage in Apple’s share of tablet market. A technology analyst at the Hong Kong-based investment boutique said, “the recent unveiling of the iPad Air and other models in Apple’s lineup were very well received and there is no doubt over the effectiveness of premium pricing but, ultimately, price is an extremely important consideration for consumers in markets with less disposable income and that’s where companies like Samsung will almost always have Apple beat.” Asia World Capital Group believes that data showing the Cupertino, California-based technology company’s share of the tablet market declined to 29.7% in the third quarter from 33.5% in the second proves that price sensitivity still plays a major role in buying decisions. The firm does caution, however, that what seems like a “race-to-the-bottom” in terms of pricing among manufacturers using the Android operating system has a high potential for backfiring as quality control declines and reliability suffers. “There are increasing instances of cheaper devices made by so-called “white box” vendors – namely little-known regional manufacturers in China – being plagued by much higher failure rates which isn’t surprising given they’re selling 7-inch Android-based tablets for less than $100,” concluded the Asia World Capital Group analyst. The firm says it remains bullish on the long-term outlook for Apple but is considering reviewing its rating on Samsung from a “hold” to a “buy” citing the likelihood for increasing sales in China and India in the coming months.
