With the $199 Nexus 7 , reviewed in this week s Personal Technology column , Google risks undercutting and antagonising tablet manufacturersthat have backed its Android operating system. Alongside the Nexus, I have been testing two such tablets justlaunched by Toshiba that come in at more than double its price. Anassessment of whether their extra features are worth the premium isafter the jump. The Excite 7.7 is the closest in size to the new Nexus – with a slightlylarger 7.7in screen next to the 7in Nexus display.
This makes ithalf an inch wider and that much harder to slip into a jacketpocket. Its aluminium rear panel is classier than that of theNexus, but makes it less easy to grip. The Excite s display is noticeably better though – muchbrighter and more vibrant, with better contrast, due to its AMOLEDtechnology. It has the same Tegra 3 quad-core processor inside as the Nexus.
Onthe outside, it has a microSD slot that the Nexus lacks to boostits storage capacity. There is also a better quality front-facing camera and the Excitehas a 5Mp rear-facing camera with an LED flash – the Nexushas no rear camera. The Nexus runs the latest version of Android – 4.1 Jellybean – but the Excite, on 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich,should be easily upgradeable to this. While I preferred watching video on the Excite s superior screen,the base 16Gb model costs $499, compared to the Nexus 16Gb versionat just $249.
If you like watching video and and the vibrancy of an AMOLEDscreen, plus feel the need for more storage and a rear camera, thenthe Excite is a good alternative to the Nexus if price is noobject. But I suspect most consumers are very price-conscious whenchoosing a 7in tablet. The Excite 13 is a different beast entirely. It has an enormous 13.3in displaywith a 16:9 aspect ratio and portability is not its strong point. There are front and rear cameras, a full-sized SD card slot andalso an HDMI connector.
At this size, two-player games and close-up cinematic experiencesare possible. I enjoyed watching HD-quality video on it and the luxury of seeingfull web pages displayed in portrait mode. Using Gmail, I could seea much longer list of messages in my inbox and see individualemails also displayed in full. Typing is also a much more accurateexperience with the widely spaced onscreen keys.
This Excite is heavy for a tablet at 2.2 pounds, but it is thin andslips easily into a bag. However, I can see its main use around thehome. It comes with a stand and looks an elegant addition to akitchen counter. Alternative locations could be a living roomcoffee table, nightstand or the desk where I m now sitting andusing it as a third display.
While it is an ideal size for watching video in these situations,the speakers lack any discernible bass, so headphones or a wirelessBluetooth speaker would be required for a good experience. The Excite 13 is $650 for a 32Gb model and $750 for a 64Gb version.Such high prices may put many off, the tablet is also too heavy tohold comfortably for long periods and some apps look odd on itswide-angle screen. But if you like the idea of a slate withunmatched screen real estate and have somewhere in mind for theExcite 13 on its stand, this would certainly be a tablet to placeon a pedestal.
