There are two methods for polishing granite--simple and complex. The simple method is a spray-and-buff technique for regular maintenance to preserve the shine and quality of granite fixtures such as countertops, backsplashes and floors. The complex method involves grinding, honing, and polishing, and is the type of stone restoration that is more appropriate for professional stone workers or amateurs with a significant amount of experience working with such hard natural stone as granite. Granite Cleaner In the simple method of granite polishing, remove any dust or debris from the surface, and spray granite cleaner on the granite according to the manufacturer's directions. It is important to use granite cleaner and not other cleansing substances, because the specialty cleaner is formulated for the properties of your stone. Granite cleaner both cleans and polishes the stone. Microfiber Cloth When using granite cleaner, use a microfiber cloth to ensure maximum shine when buffing, and to avoid leaving behind lint or other particles. Buffing can be done by hand or with an electric buffer. Grinder The grinder is the key diamond tool used to remove layers of granite to achieve a smooth, flat surface that is ready for polishing to a glass-like shine. Grinding can be done wet or dry, but wet grinding is preferred by professionals, because it is safe and reduces the amount of dust created from the grinding process. Low-Grit Diamond Pads Diamond is the only substance that is strong enough to penetrate the surface of such hard stone as granite. Like sandpaper, diamond grinder pads are used in various abrasive grits. The lower the grit, the deeper the grinding. Low-grit pads remove such issues as deep scratches and etches. Use diamond pads of 30, 70, and 120 grit for this round of grinding. Medium-Grit Diamond Pads Medium-grit pads smooth the surface further and hone it for polishing. Use 220 and 400 grit pads for this stage of grinding, which leaves a smooth surface that is flat and free of shine. High-Grit Diamond Pads Use pads ranging between 600 and 3500 grit to reach the individual crystals within the granite and bring out their reflective properties. Safety Goggles When using the more in-depth method of polishing granite, always wear safety goggles. Granite Polish Often made of tin oxide putty powder, a final polish is given to granite that has been ground smooth to finish with additional luster and shine.
