Responsible investing is also known as socially conscious, “green” or ethical investing and involves any investment plan that prioritizes social and environmental well-being alongside financial gain. Ethical investing provides long-term value for investors through exemplary governing mechanisms and an active involvement in society and the environment. A socially responsible investor will encourage and support companies that promote environmental sustenance, social justice and corporate governance, and often avoid companies involved with the production, promotion or sales of harmful substances such as alcohol, tobacco and weaponry. The Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) were developed by an international group of institutional investors in response to the increasing requirement for environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) issues in investment practices. The United Nations Secretary-General convened the process of creating the principles. The six Principles for Responsible Investment are: 1. The incorporation of ESG issues into investment analyses and decision-making processes 2. Active ownership and incorporation of ESG issues into investment policies and practices 3. The seeking of appropriate disclosure on ESG issues from entities invested in 4. The promotion of acceptance and implementation of the Principles within the investment industry 5. The undertaking of appropriate collaborations to enhance the effectiveness of implementation of the Principles 6.
