Carpet is not cheap to buy or have installed. For those of you who care how long your carpet will last and want to extend that length, here are some great tips that you may not be aware of. These are things I, as a professional floor care expert, do regularly in my own home. It doesn't cost anything or take much time but can save you just that, money and time. Would you rather hire a carpet cleaner once every three years and then replace it after 12 years or hire a professional cleaner every three years and replace it after 25 years? How long is carpet supposed to last, 5 years, 10 years, 15 years? Well maintained carpet can last 20 years if it's properly taken care of. For households with kids and pets, it's usually about 10 years. More people neglect their floors for years instead of having them cleaned and properly taken care of. They decide to wait until it gets really bad and just replace them. As a carpet cleaner I see neglected carpet far too often. What most home owners fail to realize is that if they spend some money on good cleaning, it will save them money in the long run. Here you can learn some things that will extend the life of your flooring textiles and save you money now and later. Basic maintenance goes a lot further than most realize. For example, just taking your shoes off will add years to your carpet. I really don't like taking my shoes off every time I step onto my carpet, especially when I'm only getting a drink and heading back outside. Because of this I keep a long walkway rug at my front door. Whenever I walk into my home, I drag my feed across the rug as I walk in. Sometimes I even stand on the rug while I take my shoes off. These two things are not a big deal until you wait 5 years and see the HUGE difference it actually makes. Another preventive maintenance solution is regular household vacuuming. This doesn't mean vacuuming when you see the carpet needs professional attention. If you can see dirt and debris in your carpet, then it is far overdue for cleaning. Household vacuuming should happen at least once every two weeks if you have a lot of traffic in your home. If you live alone or just with your significant other and your home sees little foot traffic, it's more like once a month. While you're at it, vacuuming the rug at your entryway would help just as much. These preventive maintenance tips are not just to keep your carpet looking amazing. You will also find yourself searching the web for professional carpet cleaning much less. About once a year at a minimum is the recommended timing to have a professional cleaner put some hot steam to your carpet. The recommended cleaning method for carpet is hot water extraction which is also known as steam cleaning. Even though you spend the money on an entry way throw rug and a nice vacuum, regular cleaning is necessary. If you take good care of your floor as recommended above, the intervals between professional cleanings will be more like two to three years versus the usually suggested one year period. All of the above suggested care will ensure your flooring textiles last you the longest they possibly can. It will also keep the air in your home much cleaner and your house looking much better. A decent vacuuming alone can change the way a room looks. Don't replace it, make it last.
