If you are using your AEG (automatic electric gun), there are a few precautions to take to keep your weapon working well and firing smoothly. Listed below are some of the most common recommendations for proper AEG maintenance: Ammunition You should always use the bullet balls (or BBs, as they are commonly known) that are recommended by the manufacturers of your gun. While they may appear to be more expensive than the bargain BBs, these BBs can have slight variations in their size and get jammed in the barrel of your gun, which can cause long term problems if there are repeated jams. These off brand BBs can also strip your pistons and shorten the lifespan of your AEG. Firing practices It is important that you do not continually dry fire your weapon. You should fire it in bursts of several rounds at a time and avoid dry firing the gun. This can cause your gear box to crack, which ruins the usefulness of the weapon. When you are done with your AEG, it is a good practice to fire a few rounds in a semi-automatic setting. Winter weather can make the gun’s plastic brittle and prone to cracking. Charging Your AEG will come to you uncharged. In your user’s manual, there is a recommended minimum and maximum charge time for your AEG. It is very important not to overcharge the gun. This can damage the battery and shorten the lifespan of the battery. You can upgrade your charger so that it is not a trickle charger (which are the stock chargers for these guns). By so doing, these rapid chargers will rapidly charge your battery and detect the level of charge, adjusting the charge as the battery is full. There is little risk for overcharging your battery with one of these chargers. Scopes If you are part of an AEG team, you will probably want a scope for your gun. These can be very elaborate and high-powered. For most uses, a simple 3-9x40scope is adequate. These usually run about $40. Actual snipers usually use a 4x32 scope. When looking for a scope, it is also important to remember that the higher magnification scopes do not necessarily increase your accuracy. Most of the time, the higher the magnification, the less accurate your shots will be. Safety AEGs look a lot like their counterparts that are real weapons. The Airsoft M16 is almost identical to its military counterpart. On each AEG, there is an orange tip on the end of the barrel. You must always keep the orange tip intact.
