Macula is the center of retina. When blood vessels in the eye start functioning abnormally and leak fluid in the center of the eye, the onset of this disorder begins. The fluid may get built up in the region between retina and outer coat of the eyes known as sclera. The fluid buildup may interfere with normal functioning of retina and cause blurred vision. This condition is known as choroidal neovascularization. Sometimes, the fluid may get saturated between choroid and retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). It may even cause retinal pigment epithelium detachment. Macular degeneration is of two types- dry macular generation and wet macular degeneration. The first type is common but less severe. On the other hand, second type is more severe and often preceded by dry macular degeneration. The exact cause of this disorder is unknown. Early detection and immediate treatment helps to reduce vision loss and improve vision. Symptoms: - Symptoms usually appear and progress rapidly. 1.Decreased vision 2.Reduced perception of lights or brightness of colors 3.Blurred vision 4.Visual distortions like blind spots in vision, objects appearing smaller, farther or lopsided 5.Hallucinations in advanced cases. Risk factors:- 1.Age: - Risk of macular degeneration increases as the person becomes older. This disease particularly affects after the age of 50. Older people above 65 are more susceptible to this disease. 2.Family history: - Inheritance also plays a significant role in determining the onset of this disease. If it is present in family, it is more likely to be transferred to offspring. 3.Race: - Caucasians are more prone to developing this disorder. 4.Obesity: - Being obese or overweight increases the risk of macular degeneration. 5.Hypertension:-High blood pressure or high cholesterol may increase the risk of this disease. Other cardiovascular diseases may also increase risk of this disease. 6.Less nutritional diet: - A diet lacking sufficient amount of fruits and vegetables may trigger this illness. 7.Smoking: - Smoking or exposure to nicotine may increase the risk of this disorder. 8.Inflammation:-Inflammation caused by swelling of body tissues may trigger onset of this disorder. Treatment:-There is no cure for wet macular degeneration. 1.Medications: - Different medications like Ranibizumab, Aflibercept and Bevacizumab are prescribed to stop growth of new blood vessels. These medications send blocking cells and are directly injected into the eyes. These medications help to recover vision by shrinking blood vessels and absorbing the fluid under the retina. However, some of these medicines may cause stroke. 2.Photodynamic Therapy: - In this therapy, a medicine called verteporfin (Visudyne) is injected into a vein in the arms. It travels towards eyes and reaches to abnormal vessels. When light from a special laser is focused on the eye, this medication blocks abnormal vessels in the eye thus preventing the leakage. 3.Photocoagulation: - Laser therapy is used to destroy abnormal cells under the macula. It prevent further damage to macula and helps to retain vision. If abnormal cells are inside the macula or if the disease has progressed to a great extent, success rate may be lower.
