Tips For Separating Scrap Metal In Calgary For Recycling

Scrap metal is found in many places and most homes have some type of scrap metal that they could recycle and even get money for taking it a company that buys scrap metal in Calgary. The price paid for scrap metal can vary, so it is best to call a company accepting scrap metal to find out current prices for different types. If one wants to sell their scrap metal there are a few tips to sorting it.

When one separates the scrap metal in Calgary before selling it to a recycling operation, he or she can get the best price per metal. Recycling operation buy scrap metal, because they sell it to foundries that melt it down and use it for manufacture new parts.

Take out any batteries, as this can be sold as entire assemblies to recycling companies of scrap metal in Calgary. The same is true with catalytic converters, they should be removed as well.

There are two types of scrap metal in Calgary: ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Ferrous metals are magnetic and non ferrous metals are not. Examples of ferrous metals include steel and iron. If ferrous metals are small enough and the magnets are large enough all metal can be lifted out using a magnet and sorted. Larger ferrous metals are identified by checking to see if a magnet will stick to it. All ferrous metals are accepted as one type of metal at recycling companies.

Non-ferrous metals are any non-magnetic metals, including stainless steel. Generally, stainless steel has a dull shine and is a heavier material than nickel or chrome-plated steel. However, it is also an alloy, which means it is mixed with another metal during smelting. For this reason, some alloys can be slightly magnetic. Any stainless steel that has attracts magnetic should be grouped with ferrous metal pieces.

Copper must be separated from other metals as well. A person can identify copper by its lightweight and reddish color. Copper corrodes over time and turns green. Three grades of copper exist. Electrical wiring is light copper, and generally must be stripped of insulation. While some recycling companies accept the wiring with the insulation attached, other do not. For those who unsure, they should ask a company before bringing it in. When companies do accept the wire with the insulation on, it is bought at a lower price.

Segregate copper tubing is medium grade copper. However, before recycling the brass fitting should be removed. Recycling companies offer less for brass if they are still attached to the copper tubing. This is because of the extra labor involved in moving the brass fittings.

Heavy copper includes copper tanks, such as water heater tanks. Before taking them in for recycling, remove any covers, fitting or attached insulation from the tank first. Water heater tanks that are not made of copper are generally zinc galvanized and lined with glass or ceramic.

Separate aluminum from metals as well. aluminum is light-weight and has a dull silver color. Recyclable aluminum includes soda cans and light-weight lawn furniture, which are light aluminum. Other types of aluminum are considered heavy aluminum and can be found as automobile parts, including manifold and thermostat housing, overhead cam and valve covers.

Lead, bronze and brass should also be separated. Lead has a soft, gray color and is soft but heavy. It is often used as piping. Brass is yellow and found in door knobs and bathroom fixtures. Bronze is a reddish-yellow color and often found in hose couplings and fittings. Separating these metals and taking them into a recycling company such as Federal Metals can help a person may some extra money.
