A stone exterior of your home creates a classic, rustic look that can make your house stand out from all the others. Instead of heavy and expensive natural stone, many homeowners turn to culture stone, a mix of concrete, small stone pieces and colored pigments shaped to look and feel like real stone. Laying this stone on the exterior of your home is a time-consuming project, but in the end will leave your home with an impressive new look. Instructions as follows: Firstly, attach a metal weep screed to the bottom of the wall, set four inches above the ground if it is plain soil or two inches above the ground if the underlying area is paved. This screed will serve as a baseline for your paving stone installation. Attach it to the wall with finishing nails or masonry screws, depending on your wall surface. Secondly, cover the wall with a weather-resistant barrier, which will prevent moisture from damaging the cultured stone. Attach the barrier directly to the wall with galvanized staples or masonry screws. When separate sections of barriers touch, overlap the edges by six inches running vertically and two inches running horizontally. Thirdly, secure a 2.5-inch expanded metal lathe to the stone wall with galvanized nails or staples. Make sure the grooves of the lathe face upward; these grooves will support the stone mortar and prevent it from slipping or dripping while it cures. Overlap sections of the lathe by two inches at vertical joints and one inch at horizontal joints. Fourthly, mix your stone mortar with water or the required additives as instructed by your specific product. In general, the mortar should have a smooth, moist consistency, but shouldn't be runny. Fifthly, spread a half- to three-quarter-inch-thick scratch coat of mortar onto the lathe with a flat trowel. Be sure you press firmly enough with the trowel that you force the mortar into the grooves. This base coat provides a flat surface for your stone installation. Allow mortar to harden slightly, so that you cannot make an imprint with your thumb. Sixthly, roughen the base coat surface with a scratch coat rake, working horizontally across the surface. This creates ridges that will make bonding with the stone easier. Allow the base coat to dry completely (this time will vary by weather conditions and type of mortar used) before continuing. Seventhly, mix a new batch of mortar per product instructions. Spread a half- to three-quarter-inch-thick layer of mortar onto the back of each stone with a flat trowel as you install it. This will ensure a proper bond with with the scratched coat already in place. Finally, let me have a short conclusion.
