A hot tap is defined as a drilling machine that is used to cut a hole into an in-service under pressure piping system. This process is done without any service interruption or product leakage. The typical applications of a hot tap include making a branch connection to begin a bypass and to allow performance of a line stop. The various components required to perform a hot tap typically comprises of a fitting that is designed to contain a system pressure, where a valve is used to control the new connection along with a drilling or a tapping machine. Other materials that are tapped are cement lined pipe, transite, cast iron, stainless steels, alloys, plastic and fiberglass.
