Fetal Alcohol Syndrome- why maternal drinking is a taboo!

Health
Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is a condition which results from maternal exposure to alcohol during pregnancy. The limit of exposure has not yet been determined. However, any woman who drinks during pregnancy puts her child to the risk of developing this disease. This is not a single disease but a collection of symptoms like learning disabilities and affected nervous system, hence commonly known as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs).

When mother drinks during pregnancy, the alcohol enters the body and reaches to child through placenta. Since fetus has low metabolizing rate for alcohol, it gets concentrated into its bloodstream. It interferes with oxygen and nutrition supply to baby’s developing organs including brain. The damage is severe especially in the first trimester when the organs are not yet fully developed and when the mother may be unaware of her pregnancy.

Fetal alcohol syndrome is a common cause of mental retardation in children.

Symptoms:-

1. Physical deformities like narrowed eyes, underdeveloped limbs and fingers

2. Disoriented physical features

3. Delayed physical growth

4. Hearing problems

5. Vision difficulties

6. Microcephaly- small brain size and head circumference

7. Poor motor coordination

8. Mental retardation

9. Learning difficulties

10. Hyperactivity

11. Heart defects

12. Extreme nervousness and anxiety

The facial deformities may also be present in normal children. It requires experience and expertise to differentiate them from those in affected children.

Treatment:-

No treatment is available for fetal alcohol syndrome. Mental retardation and learning difficulties may persist for life. Physical deformities and heart defects can be reduced to some extent by surgery. Special schooling and behavioral counseling will also help.

Prevention:-

1. Not drinking alcohol before or during pregnancy

2. Completely giving up alcohol in childbearing years

3. Seeking professional help to get rid of alcohol problem.

This disorder is not usually evident before delivery and more time will be taken for diagnosis worsening the situation. If a woman drinks regularly, she should tell this to her gynecologist to assess the risk of infant. If one child is diagnosed with this disease, it is necessary to test his or her siblings for the occurrence of fetal alcohol syndrome.

Doctors are not sure about how much alcohol is to be consumed during pregnancy to put the child at risk. The more is the drinking, higher is the risk to baby. Hence, more or less, any amount of Alcohol consumed during pregnancy or before conception can be fatal to fetus. Therefore, it is recommended that women should avoid drinking if they are pregnant or trying to become pregnant.
