I was one of the few businesses that survived the dot com crash of 2000 and sailed to safer shores. The long and winding journey had made me a wiser entrepreneur with a lot of knowledge about managing relationships and companies. The whole experience had been enriching. Once I had established myself, I married my long-time girlfriend and my biggest supporter. She was an environmental lawyer and it was always a pleasure to listen to the cases she fought, most of them for NGOs and socially aware & active citizens. Through her I realised that my company degenerated a lot of e-waste and I did very little to make a difference. I never even thought that all the junk that my computers create can be recycled and what's more is that I can actually earn a few dollars by recycling it. Talk about a handsome rebate that also clears your conscience! When I read about it online, I realised that it was a big deal and I decided to visit some of these places to actually understand the process. My wife was very proud of me when she heard of what I was doing. She urged me to give my e-waste to local bodies, thereby supporting the local economy. The closest recycling centre was in Georgia, so I headed to the Computer Recycling Georgia centre for my visit. The folks there were spirited, almost like crusaders against e-waste. The Computer Recycling Atlanta Georgia has some of the meanest demolition machines ever made and they made the paper shredder look like a toddler. They gave me a tour of the waste management TV disposal unit. It was simply amazing. I was amazed at how systematically they took the part apart, separated the toxic elements and plastic material. I would have never imagined that even a simple mother board like chipset could have so many smaller components. After that I told them about my business and ushered me into the waste management computer recycling department. As the name suggests I was in computer department and I realised so much of the things that are there in the computer are disposable. I realised that electronics cannot be left too far behind and even checked out their waste management electronics recycling department. It's almost as though, I was a changed man, after my visit to computer waste disposal centre. I scanned my phone for various computer disposal companies in my area, closer to office with the thought of saving money. Computer waste companies are actually far and few. Electronic computer recycler is a great boon for the entire industry. Responsible management of e-waste is a big deal and people should seriously consider doing it at the micro level, there by influencing the companies to implement it at the macro level. As Gandhi once said, you have to be the change that you want to see and finally today I understood the profound meaning of those words. The very next day, I had my manager make e-waste management company policy and all employees were to strictly abide by it. There would be rewards and gratification for employees who disposed electronics efficiently via the company. Everybody had new PCs and the old ones where recycled. This was one major upgrade for my company.
