The handling of shipping package forms an important part of international shipping carrier. However, the packaging and safe delivery of the products or goods solely rests on the courier or postal services that has to ensure that parcels/letters are delivered to the forwarding address of their customers, suppliers and other business partners to any part of the globe. The various courier and parcel forwarding service providers such as UPS, FedEx, and USPS etc have their own package design and testing labs that ensures a strong packaging of adequate strength to provide sufficient protection of the concerned products or goods to be delivered. The packaging of goods plays a key role in ensuring their safe arrival at its destination. For most types of goods, there are some guidelines to bear in mind when packaging them for transit. For instance, using the packaging box numerous times loses its original protective qualities. The following principles or tips will help to protect the contents of the parcel while being delivered by the parcel forwarding service providers and in avoiding unnecessary and potential costly delays en route. * The outer box: The package forwarding service provider needs to choose an outer box that is large enough to hold the contents and inside the box, the items must be wrapped individually with minimum three inches of cushioning on all sides and placed at least two inches from the walls of the box. The voids if any must be filled up with even more cushioning and packing the padding all the way to the edges of the box. It is advisable not to use a box that is overtly big, as it will occupy more space than required during transit and costs more to ship. If possible, it is recommended not to reuse boxes and to include an extra address label or contact details of both the shipper/mail forwarding service provider inside the parcel as this will help in tracing the intended forwarding address (recipient) even if the outer packaging gets damaged in transit. * The filler material: The filler material should be around 8cm such as air cellular cushioning material, loose fill peanuts, corrugated fiberboard, foam pads, crumpled paper or molded plastics that must be used all around the item or product to fill empty spaces that prevents goods shifting inside the box during transit. To avoid items getting dirty, damp or wet it is recommended to place larger items in a plastic bag before adding the filler. Smaller items or spoilable granular products should be sealed in a sturdy container. Fragile items should be shipped ‘box in box’ formula that is a smaller inner box in a larger outer one. When shipping liquids, they should be contained in firmly sealed bottles that are unbreakable or at least well cushioned. * Seal the outer box: While sealing the outer box, the tape used must be of high quality with 5 cm wide packaging tape and reinforcing all edge seams. The tape must be run evenly across flaps and seams by using “H” taping method and repeating this method for the bottom of the box. * Address correctly: To ensure efficient delivery, it is essential to provide a clearly legible, complete and correct address and must be physical address rather than a PO Box number. The delivery information must be clearly inscribed on the outside as well as on the inside of the box. It is recommended to include the address of the mail forwarding/package forwarding service providers in case the package needs to be returned. Thus, these tips would help in safe arrival of shipping packages to the recipient.
