A website is a perfect space for you to tell the world about your business, what you do, what you offer; in short, a website is a virtual brochure for your business. A common question arise is that how would you know if your website is doing well in fulfilling the purpose of visitors who are visiting your website? The answer is very simple, by calculating bounce rate. There are numerous metrics available using which you can answer the aforementioned question but the best among those is bounce rate or exit rate.

Bounce rate is a popular term used to perform web traffic analysis. It calculates percentage of visitors who after entering the site leave it without browsing through other pages of that website. It is a measure of helpfulness of a website in persuading visitors to carry on with their visit rather than ending it abruptly. It is expressed in percentage and signifies part of visits that ended on first page.

A simple formula that is used to determine bounce rate is:

BR=Tv/Te, where BR= Bounce Rate, Tv= total number of visitors viewing single page and Te= total entries

An example would make you understand about bounce rate better. Suppose your site has 10,000 visitors in a month, out of those 6000 exits after visiting a solitary page, i.e., your home page then the bounce rate here would be 60%. You can easily calculate bounce rate for a single page or for the whole website. The lower the bounce rate, the better it is for the website as it gives an idea that a large percentage of visitors carried on with their visit and browse through most of its pages. A low bounce rate also means that the visitors were very comfortable with navigation and design of your website which facilitate them to dig deeper into the website.

It is important to note that having a bounce rate of 50% is average while anything over 60% but less than 80% means that you ought to be concerned and anything over 80% simply means that something is wrong with your website. There are numerous reasons due to which a visitor bounces back. Some of them are:

  • Clicking on a link which directs a visitor to different website
  • Closing an already opened tab or a window
  • Visitor deliberately typed a new URL
  • Pressing backspace key or clicking on “back” button to exit the site
  • Session timed out

Here are some tips using which you can keep your bounce rate as minimal as possible:

Deliver fresh, relevant, gripping and up to date content on your website to keep Bounce rate to as low as possible as an out of date and irrelevant content is massive turn off for the visitors. A graphically rich website entices a visitor to go further into the page thus decreasing bounce rate. Make sure your layout and theme of your website is attractive. Also, design your website in such a way that it loads quickly as people are getting impatient with each passing day and can your page if it loads too slowly.
