It was just a month ago when we showed you the first TV ad in the North Coast House race to replace retiring Democratic Rep. Lynn Woolsey. It was from business executive Stacey Lawson , and it was generally a sunshine-and-rainbows biographical piece, complete with what appears to be Super 8 filmfootage from Stacey's childhood. Gradually, some of the othercandidates — including Assemblyman Jared Huffman, D-SanRafael, GOP business executive Dan Roberts , and Marin County supervisor Susan Adams — put up their own bio pieces. Like most of the mailthat's hitting district mailboxes now, the early TV pieceshave been pretty positive. Well, the gloves are officially off, as Adams drops an ad Friday inMarin, Sonoma and Mendocino counties that takes aim at Lawson.Noting Lawson's spotty voting record and business background that The Chronicle has reported on, Adams' ad compares herto "another high tech millionaire" –former GOPguv candidate Meg Whitman. It shows Whitman's face morphinginto Lawson's. Ouch. In a district that historically votes 62 percent Democraticin primaries, morphing a fellow Democrat into Meg a hard swing. Butit is getting near crunch time and several internal polls say thatwhile Huffman leads the race by a healthy margin, there's alogjam of candidates fighting for the second ticket to the Novemberdance. Somebody was bound to swing first. We'll see what the effect of this ad is. Remember, thistop-two primary is new turf…and a 12-candidate OPEN field istough to negotiate. The dynamics are different andthree-dimensional chess doesn't begin to explain it. Hittingone opponent could hurt that target, but it could enable anothercandidate to leap forward. Said Lawson spokesperson Jason Liles: "Lawson's messageis obviously resonating with voters if our opponents are spendingtheir time and money going negative. Their polls must show whatours do: that Lawson is solidly in second place and that she hasthe momentum to win." Here's the Roberts bio ad that's playing on cablethroughout the district: And here's Huffman's: Author/activist Norman Solomon is working a TV ad featuring fellowactivist Mike "B.J. Hunnicutt from MASH" Farrell , but it will be positive. Unless Farrell morphs back into BJ andrips into Major Frank Burns.
