Peter Lind from the Teachers Council told ONE News: "We'reinterested in whether or not they're a trained and qualifiedteacher, so we need authorised copies of their academictranscripts, usually the identity is largely established throughthe academic qualifications." But Lind said a copy of the teacher's birth certificate is notrequired. Had the vetting process required Miki to provide a copy of hisbirth certificate it would have revealed all previous names usedand his convictions would have been picked up in the police vettingprocess. The impact of the case has been felt in a number of communitieswhere Miki taught and deceived, including Malcolm Harding who hiredMiki to work with at-risk youth at Stratford Learning Centre. "Why did I employ him? Why did I not pick up the mistakes? What didI expose these kids to? What possible harm could Te Rito have donewhen they stayed with him and his male partner when I thought theywere staying with him and his wife," Harding told ONE News. An extensive investigation has so far found Miki has notreoffended. Principals suspicious Court documents show at least two principals became suspicious ofMiki after he began working at schools in 2007. At one school, Miki faked a brain tumour and said he was leavingthe teaching profession when a principal aired his concerns. The next school decided to employ Miki despite being told about hisprevious convictions and multiple aliases while doing referencechecks. When he was confronted about his convictions Miki claimedhis twin brother was responsible. It was not until the police became involved with Miki that his trueidentity was discovered by the principal who then terminated hisemployment. After Miki left, the principal then went through his belongings anddiscovered documentation in another man's name. The man was a friend of Miki's who had a legitimate teachingqualification. Miki applied to change his friend's name, then notified theorganisation who granted the qualification, as well as the NewZealand Teaching Council, of the name change, which he used to gainemployment. It appears the principal and the police did not notify the TeachingCouncil about Miki's actions and he was subsequently able to teachunder the same alias at two Auckland schools. Yesterday Judge Alison Sinclair decided to permanently suppress thenames of two Auckland schools - a primary and a high school - Mikitaught at. An alias Miki used while employed at the primary schoolwill also remain secret. Other schools Miki taught at during the past few years have beennamed. They are: Matapihi Primary School in Tauranga, where the man workedfrom July 2009 to August 2009; Rotorua's Te Kura Kaupapa Maori O TeKoutu, where he was employed for two months from October toDecember 2008; Rangitahi College in Murupara, when he worked fromNovember 2007 to September 2008; and Stratford Community LearningCentre where he was employed from July to November 2007. - With Fairfax Email this article Print this article Text size + - more...
