Of all the reasons I do this job of mine, one of them is to help people. The others include the fame, the adulation, the huge emoluments and expensive freebies that come my way, not to mention the book contracts and essays I am asked to submit to the industry organs of the day. If you are in anyway attuned to reality, you will have probably ascertained by now that most of the above is - unfortunately for me – a woolly fantasy. Brushing aside this daily disappointment, I do still take the first thing seriously, in that I like to help people to make the best decisions for themselves when it comes to my area of interest: home and interiors. What I am turning my scuffed microscope on today is heating – bathroom radiators, specifically - and essentially breaking down that subject into a sort of glossary some of the main things you might come across. Helpful, that’s me. Design Let’s begin with the cool stuff, the design. Pretty much any design you can think of is out there now, from sleek, modern vertical radiators to classic and updated horizontal models. Where there used to be a certain amount of separation between the two – vertical: modern; horizontal: traditional – now these two concepts are mixed up, with each applying to the other. Finishes This is also an area where in which you have some serious space to roam. Where once radiators were condemned to neutral hell, now we have glittering chrome, sleek snowy white glosses, black and rough anthracite finishes, among any number of cool looks. Combine this with the above and you will have the radiator equivalent of eye candy. Ahem. Materials I’m afraid as we sink lower we are getting to the more technical aspects of this piece. Bear with me, I’ll make this as painless as possible. Essentially, I know you want to save money, and that you want long service out of your heated towel radiators , so ensure you get a solidly built unit made – ideally – of low carbon steel. This gives you toughness, strength and enviable corrosion resistance. All you need, basically. Power An electric towel rail is a great way to add flexibility to your bathroom. Of course, central heating power is absolutely fine, but if you want to save some money in the warmer months having the ability to activate individual radiators – to dry clothes, for example – is very handy.
