Many people have to see an optician at least once in their life, whether they have had bad eyesight forever or whether they started to struggle with different tasks in old age. Edmonton opticians are not eye doctors, who are actually known as ophthalmologists. Rather, opticians are the people who will help you choose the eyeglasses that you want to purchase for use, but they can also perform a number of other tasks with eye care as well. What Does an Optician Do? Edmonton opticians have a very important job; they help you make the decisions that you need to make about your eyeglasses. Your glasses need to be comfortable, so that you will actually wear them as often as you are supposed to. They will take a number of different factors into consideration during this process: the shape and size of your face and head, how the glasses are going to be used, and the lifestyle of the person who is using them. Once they determine all of those things, Edmonton opticians will make several suggestions for the client to consider. Some Edmonton opticians can perform other tasks as well. For example, at companies that get your glasses to you within an hour, the optician may be trained to grind the lenses that go in the glasses. They may also be the person who helps you get settled in before you get your eye tests done by the eye doctor. Some of them will also do tasks related to eyeglass maintenance and repair, including tightening screws, readjusting arms, and anything else related to the care and maintenance of your frames and lenses. How does one become an optician? There are a number of ways that you can become an optician. Almost every local government requires you to take some classes in an optician program, or you may have to complete the program and get a certificate. Many community colleges will offer these certifications. There are also associate's degree programs that will allow you to go and become an optician. The classes you take will include a number of different courses. Some of these classes are about working with people, others about the eye: including anatomy and optics. While you are looking at college programs, make sure that your optician program is accredited by an optician accreditation board (there are several). If your government requires that you have an internship to work at an eye care facility, then it will be included as part of your program. If you decide to have an apprenticeship (which you can do instead of schooling in some cases.) you will work under a licensed optician for up to four years before you can become licensed. In some areas, you do not need to have a license, but licensure will guarantee to your patients that you know what you're doing and help you feel comfortable in your position. Some areas require an internship and a license in order to work. The eligibility requirements will vary depending on where you live, but many times you have to take an exam which will have practical and/or written elements to it. You can also earn certifications from a number of different optician and optometry boards; talk to your employer and/or your college for more information. Joining the ranks of Edmonton opticians, like those of westlock eye centre, doesn't take a fancy degree, but it does take a lot of time and training in order to start working as an optician.
