Clothing base layer is in its simplest form whatever you're wearing clothes that actually touch your skin. What for most of us most of the time, is most of our clothes. But in the context of sport, base layer clothing is a more subtle, and is one that probably should keep in mind if you want to be able to get the most out of their training and performance, or if you just like to stay comfortable as a bead of sweat. Now, there will be a brief content of science here but I promise I'll be brief and is actually quite interesting. A biological advantage that humans have over most other animals besides opposable thumbs and big brains no less is our ability to regulate our body temperature. A fit man can in the long, unkempt virtually any other animal on the planet. The reason we do this is because we sweat. While most of us do not particularly like sweating, giving us the ability to disperse the heat quickly, which means we can continue for long. This contrasts, for example, your dog. He has a speed advantage because it has four legs, and almost any dog can run faster than any human being in the short term. But your dog has to cool panting, which means it has no limits on how far before it starts to overheat. You, as a human being, basically have no limits. Now what does this have to do with clothing base layer is leveraging and optimizing our ability to regulate our body temperature. As you exercise, your metabolism cranks and generates heat. Since you can only tolerate so much heat, water flushes your body as sweat which removes the heat with it. If your body can not get rid of enough heat this way, begins to slow down, so you do not end up overheating and fainting. The problem with this, and this is what the base layer clothing is designed to address, is that usually we wear clothes and it throws a wrench in the whole process. Clothing absorbs water and the water just sits there, slowly absorbing heat. This slows the rate at which your body can get rid of excess heat, which in turn decreases their ability to perform. Clothing base layer, by contrast, is designed to move water away from your body through a process known as wicking. What this does is allow you own process of regulating the heat of your body to function properly, which leads to better performance. The nice side effect of this is that it also allows you to feel more comfortable, because you feel colder and because they are not covered in sweat clothes stick to your body as much mud pond.
