After a wild opening night to the NBA season that saw them beating their very good cross-town rivals, the LA Lakers have started to trend downwards towards the bottom of the conference. The team is currently 4-7, good for being the fourth worst team in the west. This isn't exactly surprising as many experts predicted the Lakers to be out of playoffs contention this year due to their supposedly lack of talent in the roster. However, the reason why the team is losing isn't something that most have anticipated. The team really isn't as starved in talent as many expected. The role players on the team are performing at an efficient rate. The problem with the Lakers right now is that their starters, the supposedly reliable players, aren't helping the team at all. Let's start first with Steve Nash. Being a big fan of Steve for more than a decade now, it is disappointing to see someone performing like a shell of himself. He used to be the offensive maestro that made a mediocre roster look good. His great shooting and amazing passing made him entertaining to watch and a very effective guard despite his defensive issue. However, the Steve Nash that is playing right now is so far gone from the one who used to mesmerize basketball fans. His shooting looks to be gone and his passing isn't quite as it used to. What's left a point guard who can't create for his team on offense and a very big liability on defense. Many are ascribing to his health issue as to what's stopping him from being effective and some are saying that he can be good once he gets healthy again. The problem here is that at 40 years old, it is ludicrous to believe that he can be healthier. Another player that's not really helping the Lakers right now is Pau Gasol. Having watched Pau since he was in Memphis, I have to say that he has been one of the most skilled post-player in this era. However, the effects of age is also showing signs to how he plays. He doesn't have the same bounce to his moves from back then. Back then, you could just drop the ball to him in the post and he'd create something. Right now, he is laboring with his post-moves.
